Hi, my name is Cieja Montgomery. I live in Grand Junction, Colorado. My best friend, Kris Anders, invited me to participate in the exciting event known as World Read Aloud Day. I am honored by the invitation to read for this event as books can be found amongst the treasures of my house. The books I have chosen for this occasion are those I have read either as a child or more recently as a teacher. They are all animal themed books. It was hard to choose which books to read for the World Read Aloud Day event too.
When I was a little girl, my mom would take my siblings and I to the library once a week where we could (and did) check out all the books we could carry by ourselves. My favorite books were about animals. It did not matter if they were real or imaginary animals. A book draws the reader into the story so one imagines one’s self racing across the desert on a black stallion or flying through the night sky on a red dragon or sharing a young boy’s love for his dogs. One of my favorites from childhood is Riki Tiki Tavi. A recent favorite is the story of a baby fruit bat that ends up living with a bird family. The book is Stellaluna.
Books contain wonderful images created by the words an author uses and the imagination of the reader. Regardless of how many times I reread a book, I always find myself drawn into the story as if I was really there. Books allow the reader to travel to faraway places, meet interesting people, and have fascinating experiences without ever leaving your chair or bed or even the tire swing in the backyard.
I share my love of reading with my niece, Trinity and have done so since she was a year old.
In fact, in one of the readings you may hear Trinity in the background as I am reading to her at the same time I am recording an audio version of the book. Trinity is learning to read in kindergarten this year. Her enjoyment in listening to me read to her or reading the pictures in the story to me is beautiful to see.
I hope you enjoy the audio version of the books I have read for the 2010 World Read Aloud Day. I know I have enjoyed reading them for you.
